As 2018 approached, many had
hopes that the new year would
lead society out of the crazy era
it was stuck in. Instead, society
was met with foolish decisions by
many. One of the most foolish
decisions came from YouTuber
Logan Paul, who decided to film a
dead body on his trip to Japan.
In Paul’s world, nothing is
too much. Vlogs and videos
are extremely outrageous and
elaborate in hopes of entertaining
his younger fanbase. The
crazy videos launched Logan Paul
into the limelight, garnering over
sixteen million subscribers and
more than three billion views. In
the search for even more success,
the question arises; how much is
too much?
In a now deleted video, Paul
visits the Aokigahara Forest,
A.K.A Japan’s infamous “Suicide
Forest”. Once there, Paul finds
the body of a victim of suicide,
calling the police. However, it
is the way in which he reacts to
the situation which caused the
backlash. In an ingenuine tone,
Paul explains that suicide is serious
while simultaneously giggling,
smiling, and later bragging about
the situation.
After a first glimpse of the
body, Paul and his crew approach
the victim. Paul goes up
to the body and films it from a
very close proximity allowing the
viewers to see what he has found.
Turning the camera back to himself,
Paul begins to process and
reflect on what he has seen. Right
from the beginning, it is obvious
that the YouTuber is shocked and
in awe. However, soon thereafter
the reflecting and lamenting tone
of his video no longer exists.
The situation was used as
clickbait, a way to reel in more
viewers and subscribers. The day
before Paul uploaded the video,
he tweeted without remorse about
how “crazy” and “real” his new
vlog was. Paul even went as far as
to place a picture of the man as
the thumbnail, or the first image
you see before clicking on the
video.
Paul faced a massive amount of
backlash for the situation. Many
people were angered over the
insensitive and disrespectful way
that he treated the victim, in addition
to his treatment of the topic
of suicide.
Many YouTubers and other
celebrities pointed out that Paul
is an adult and should be held
accountable, especially knowing
that his audience is comprised of
mostly tweens. Popular YouTuber
Ethan Dolan tweeted, “The horrible
measures people will go to in
order to have content to stay relevant
is absolutely disgusting. Being
blinded by your ego so much
so that thinking it is okay to make
insensitive remarks about suicide,
and broadcasting it for millions of
children to see is sickening.”
Following the backlash and impact
that Paul’s video had on social
media, the YouTuber released
a minute long video apologizing
for his actions.
In his apology Paul states, “I
didn’t do it for the views. I get
views. I did it because I thought
I could make a positive ripple on
the internet, not cause a monsoon
of negativity.”
Although he claims he has the
greatest intents in apologizing to
the world, it is his blatant selfish
and naive tendencies which keep
him from appearing sorry or
regretful.
Paul does not realize that in the
process of filming this video he
hurt the family and friends of the
victim. It was disrespectful to all
those who suffer from suicidal
thoughts by showing that suicide
can be used as clickbait and has
the power to make someone
even more powerful and popular
than they
previously
were. In his
apology he
refers to
himself too
many times.
Everything
is about him.
He claims
he is sorry
that his actions
have
led to the
backlash and
that his actions
have given him a bad reputation.
However, not once in the video
does he apologize to those he
hurt or offended. He is selfish
and immoral showing the true
extent that he will go to in order
to achieve a greater level of
popularity.
Recently, Paul partnered with
the National Suicide Hotline and
created a video that advocates
for suicide prevention. Paul
travels and meets with victims of
depression who have considered
or attempted suicide. In hopes of
redeeming himself, or maybe in
hopes of learning something new,
Paul created a moving video with
a serious statement. Nonetheless,
is that enough for redemption?
Despite this new video, it is still
important to understand that Paul
knew exactly what he was doing.
Not only did he show millions
of people a dead body and use it
as clickbait, his trip to Japan was
also filled with obnoxious and
culturally insensitive videos. In
these he runs around the streets
of Japan disrespecting traditions
and expectations that one should
follow while visiting another
country.
It is undeniable that Paul is
currently one of the biggest
YouTubers around and this
makes him seemingly untouchable
to consequences.
Not only did YouTube neglect
to give Paul any consequences,
but he ended up making money
off of the situation by monetizing
the videos and gaining more
subscribers due to the controversy.
While this video and the
negative reactions it received
have not stopped Paul from
creating content, hopefully it has
created a promising conversation
about the insensitive lengths
people will go to for internet
fame.
