This school year, many more freshmen have been placed in honors classes in an attempt to make higher level classes more representative of the diversity in our school. This was done with good intentions; however, the outcome is not what was expected. A high percentage of freshmen students are failing or struggling in the classes they have been placed in. As a result, many individuals dropped back down to college prep classes, or if they were unable to switch down they either dropped the class or remained in a class they are not doing well in. While the idea is good, perhaps the lack of diversity in higher level classes can be helped by encouraging students to make their own decision to take them or provide more support to those within the class. That way, students are more likely to succeed in the class.
